SUV Rollovers
Sacramento, California Personal Injury Lawyer

SUV and van rollovers have been in the news quite a bit the past few years. Manufacturers have been held liable by courts across the country for defective design of their vehicles that has led to deaths and serious injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 10,000 people died in rollover accidents in the United States last year alone.

Sport Utility Vehicle's (SUVs) have become one of the most popular vehicles on the roads. Used widely by families as they are advertised as safe and well built. However, research has shown that that many SUV's have design defects that cause them to be less safe than some other vehicles. The high center of gravity on a sport utility vehicle poses a higher threat for rollovers during foreseeable driving maneuvers. The vehicles also have a greater risk of flipping over when involved a collision, resulting in serious bodily injuries and occupant ejections.

Some alarming SUV FACTS from the NHTSA include:
  • Ejections account for 63 percent of all fatalities in rollover crashes and often result in costly and debilitating head injuries.
  • More than 90 percent of passenger vehicle rollover crashes are single-vehicle crashes, and more than 80 percent of occupant deaths in rollover crashes occurred in single-vehicle crashes.
  • More than half of the single-vehicle crash deaths resulted from rollovers - compared with 11 percent in multiple-vehicle crashes.
  • Almost 25% of all highway deaths were due to rollover accidents in 2001;
  • More than 50 percent of all SUV-related deaths were attributed to SUV rollovers.

Tragically, churches and other organizations have been prone to such accidents due to the popularity of 15 passenger vans. These vans were originally designed for cargo, not passengers, and have been adapted by profit-seeking companies to carry people.
